    Renske Herder

Renske Herder is a Dutch multidisciplinary designer and fine artist born in Leeuwarden (1986). She is working across painting, collage, illustration, print making and she's also working as so called 'plate painter' (plateelschilder). Originally Renske is graduated as an Industrial Design Engineer at the University of Twente, but always had a difficult relation with mass production and mass consumption. She found a much bigger love for crafts and simplicity. 2013/2014 was a period where she lived on Bonaire and this place had the perfect conditions to make her start painting on a regular basis. On Bonaire she experienced a basic island life that consisted of kitesurfing, painting and working in a furniture store. Back in The Netherlands Renske is now gradually developing her style and technique. She is still kitesurfing and also cycling, hiking and camping where she can to stay connected with nature.

    ARTIST STATEMENT NL:

    ARTIST STATEMENT ENG:

People put a lot of stress on themselves these days. All day we are busy working, gathering material goods and reaching a high status. Often we are to busy to be able to enjoy the ordinary daily life. In my work I am looking for the silence and the beauty of simplicity. These elements have always been a part of our lives, but nowadays they are hard to find.

One of my recent projects is about the silence and the infinite void of the Frisian (Dutch) landscape. Recently I moved back to this part of the country and I was touched by the space and the peace I felt immediatly. Overlooking the sea (waddensea) and the fields I feel the infinity of space and time. The pictures are made with an analog pinhole camera. The paintings are mostly made by oil on canvas.

  • KITESURFING

I really enjoy kitesurfing. The sport allows me to be active and be surrounded by nature at the same time. Kitesurfing is one of the best ways to clear my head and feel free.
